Itinerary
Explore the detailed day-by-day progression of this ultimate Tanzanian adventure, perfectly balancing terrestrial wildlife tracking with unforgettable aerial views.
Your spectacular Tanzanian safari begins as your professional Africa Rise Up guide warmly welcomes you at your accommodation in Arusha and escorts you to your private four-wheel-drive safari cruiser. Leaving the city behind, you will travel across the picturesque Maasai Steppe until the landscape dramatically shifts to reveal the ancient, bulbous baobab trees that define Tarangire National Park. Known for hosting one of the largest concentrations of wild elephants in East Africa, this rugged wilderness offers immediate, high-impact wildlife viewing as you observe massive, multi-generational herds digging for underground water along the sandy banks of the Tarangire River. Your guide will expertly navigate the river circuits, keeping a sharp eye out for resident lion prides resting in the shade and solitary leopards draped across the thick tree branches. After enjoying a gourmet picnic lunch surrounded by the sights and sounds of the bush, you will continue your exploration of this diverse ecosystem before exiting the park to check into your beautiful safari lodge, perfectly positioned for a relaxing evening and a freshly prepared dinner under the African stars.
Following a hearty breakfast, you will depart the Tarangire region and begin one of the most scenic drives in the world, ascending the steep, rust-colored cliffs of the Great Rift Valley and passing through the cool, mist-shrouded agricultural highlands of Karatu. You will enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing briefly at the crater rim to marvel at the sheer size of the caldera below before descending the western slopes into the iconic, seemingly infinite golden savanna of the Serengeti National Park. Upon registering at the Naabi Hill Gate, you will commence an exhilarating en-route game drive toward the central Seronera region, an area globally celebrated as the ultimate big cat territory due to its intricate network of permanent water sources. The afternoon is dedicated entirely to tracking the Serengeti's apex predators, allowing you to observe cheetahs utilizing termite mounds to scan the horizon for prey and large prides of lions actively patrolling their territories. You will eventually arrive at your authentic permanent tented camp situated deep within the wilderness, where you can unwind by a roaring campfire and listen to the distant calls of hyenas before retreating to your luxurious canvas suite.
You will wake up in the pitch dark of the early morning to be collected by the specialized balloon flight crew, embarking on a thrilling nocturnal drive through the Serengeti where the vehicle headlights frequently illuminate active, night-hunting predators like civets and hyenas. Arriving at the designated launch site just as the sky begins to lighten, you will enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a thorough safety briefing while watching the massive, colorful balloon envelope slowly inflate with roaring bursts of fire. As you step into the basket and gently lift off the ground, the sun breaches the horizon, bathing the endless plains in spectacular golden light and offering an entirely new, breathtaking perspective of the African wilderness. Your highly skilled pilot will smoothly navigate the wind currents, sometimes flying high enough to showcase the curvature of the earth and the vastness of the migration herds, and sometimes dipping incredibly low to the treetops to allow for intimate, silent wildlife photography of elephants and giraffes below. Upon touching back down on the savanna after approximately an hour in the air, you will be met by the ground crew to celebrate your flight with a traditional champagne toast, followed by a lavish, multi-course English breakfast cooked and served right in the middle of the bush. After receiving your official flight certificate, you will reunite with your driver-guide to spend the remainder of the afternoon tracking big cats across the central plains before returning to your camp for dinner.
With the spectacular memories of your aerial safari still fresh, you will dedicate this entire day to intense, ground-level wildlife tracking across the vast expanses of the Serengeti. Because you have a full day at your disposal, your guide will tailor the route dynamically based on recent wildlife movements, taking you far off the main trails to explore the massive granite rock formations known as kopjes, which serve as crucial nurseries and lookout points for lion prides. You will spend hours navigating the riverine forests searching for heavily camouflaged leopards resting with their kills in the branches of sausage trees, and scanning the short-grass plains to witness the incredible speed of cheetahs embarking on high-stakes hunts. To ensure you do not miss a single moment of action, you will enjoy a packed lunch at a scenic picnic site surrounded by nature, allowing you to stay out in the wild through the changing afternoon light. As the golden hour approaches, offering spectacular conditions for wildlife photography, you will slowly make your way back toward your tented camp, completely exhilarated by a full day of raw, unfiltered nature.
You will enjoy a final, early morning game drive in the Serengeti, utilizing the cool dawn temperatures to spot predators returning from their nightly activities before slowly beginning your transit journey eastward. Leaving the endless plains behind, you will ascend back into the lush, prehistoric-feeling cloud forests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, eventually reaching the descent road of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. You will plunge six hundred meters down the steep, forested walls into the caldera floor, entering a breathtaking, self-contained volcanic amphitheater that hosts over twenty-five thousand large mammals. The game viewing here is intensely concentrated, and you will spend the afternoon exploring the acacia woodlands, the open grasslands, and the alkaline shores of Lake Magadi, tracking massive bull elephants, dense pods of hippos, and large, black-maned lions. Your guide will focus specifically on locating the highly elusive and critically endangered black rhinoceros, granting you an exceptional opportunity to successfully photograph all of the Big Five in a single trip. After an awe-inspiring game drive, you will ascend the crater walls and drive to your charming lodge in Karatu for your final evening in the Tanzanian highlands.
You will enjoy a relaxed breakfast at your highland lodge before taking a short drive to the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to explore the highly scenic Lake Manyara National Park. This compact, incredibly diverse park offers a striking contrast to the open plains of the Serengeti, plunging you immediately into a dense, evergreen groundwater forest alive with massive troops of olive baboons and silvery-cheeked hornbills. As you drive further into the park, the forest opens up to reveal acacia woodlands and the vast, shimmering expanse of the alkaline lake, which is frequently tinged pink by thousands of flamingos and pelicans. Your guide will carefully scan the tree branches in search of the park's legendary tree-climbing lions, offering one last unique photographic opportunity before you enjoy a final picnic lunch. You will then exit the park and begin a smooth, comfortable drive along well-maintained tarmac roads back to the safari capital of Arusha, arriving in perfect time for your onward international flight or your designated hotel drop-off, bringing your extraordinary six-day big cats and balloon safari to a triumphant close.

Frequently Asked Questions
Serengeti Balloon & Big Cats Safari Details
The balloon safari is a comprehensive, premium experience. It includes a pre-dawn pickup from your Serengeti lodge, the one-hour (approximate) hot air balloon flight over the plains, a traditional champagne celebration upon landing, a fully catered hot English breakfast cooked in the bush, an official flight certificate, and the mandatory TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) ballooning concession fees.
Your highly experienced pilot has precise control over the balloon's altitude. Depending on the wind currents and wildlife below, the balloon may fly at treetop level to allow for intimate photography of giraffes and elephants, or ascend to 1,000 feet or more to give you a breathtaking, panoramic view of the vast Serengeti ecosystem and the curvature of the earth.
Yes, it is exceptionally safe. The balloon operators we partner with adhere to the strictest international aviation safety standards. The commercially licensed pilots have thousands of hours of flight experience, and the balloon envelopes and baskets are rigorously maintained and regularly replaced. If weather conditions are deemed unsafe, the flight will not launch.
Passenger safety is the absolute priority. If the chief pilot cancels the flight due to high winds, heavy rain, or poor visibility, you will receive a 100% refund for the balloon portion of your safari package. Because you are on a multi-day safari, we may also attempt to reschedule the flight for the following morning if space permits.
This itinerary is fantastic year-round. However, if you want to fly over the massive herds of the Great Migration calving season, travel between late December and March. If you prefer classic, dry-season big cat tracking where the grass is short and animals congregate around water sources, the months of June through October are spectacular.
For safety reasons regarding basket height and brace positions during landing, children must be at least 7 years old and a minimum of 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall to participate in the hot air balloon flight. If you are traveling with younger children, they can remain at the lodge with a guardian or enjoy an early morning game drive while the rest of the party flies.
While wildlife is wild and unpredictable, this specific 6-day routing offers one of the highest statistical probabilities in Africa for spotting the complete Big Five. Tarangire guarantees elephants; the Serengeti Central Seronera is famously dense with lions and leopards; buffalo are ubiquitous; and your descent into the Ngorongoro Crater specifically targets the rare black rhino.
Because you will be collected in the pre-dawn hours, the Serengeti air will be very chilly. We highly recommend dressing in layers. Wear a warm fleece jacket or a light down sweater, long trousers, and closed-toe shoes. As the sun rises and the burner heats the balloon, you will quickly warm up and can shed your outer layers. A hat is also recommended to protect your head from the radiant heat of the balloon burner.
Absolutely. The bush breakfast is a lavish affair, and the catering team can perfectly accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-specific diets. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions at the time of booking so we can relay the information to the balloon company and your safari lodges.
No specific fitness level is required for the general safari, as most game viewing is done from the comfort of your private 4x4 Land Cruiser. However, for the balloon flight, passengers must be reasonably mobile, as you need to be able to climb into and out of the high-sided wicker basket, and assume a crouched "brace position" during the landing sequence.
Standard balloon pricing is based on an average passenger weight. If a passenger exceeds 120 kg (265 lbs), the balloon company may require the purchase of an additional half or full ticket, as weight directly affects the lift capacity and safety of the balloon. Please notify us in advance if this applies so we can make the proper arrangements.
All transit between Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Serengeti is conducted in your private, customized 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser. The drives are incredibly scenic and serve as "en-route game drives," meaning your wildlife viewing continues uninterrupted as you move from one incredible ecosystem to the next.
