Itinerary
Your Tanzanian adventure begins the moment you touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — after clearing customs and immigration, you will be warmly greeted outside the arrival terminal by your dedicated Africa Rise Up Safaris private driver-guide, assisted with your luggage and escorted to a plush, air-conditioned 4x4 safari vehicle for your private 45-minute transfer to Arusha, enjoying your first views of Tanzanian life as you pass coffee plantations and local markets with Mount Meru visible in the distance before checking into your handpicked boutique lodge nestled amid lush tropical gardens, then at 06:00 PM gathering in the lounge for an essential pre-safari briefing with your expert guide and company hosts where we walk you through the upcoming route, safety protocols, and packing adjustments, followed by a welcome dinner featuring locally sourced Afro-European fusion cuisine.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast at the lodge before checking out and loading your bags into your private custom 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser, then begin a scenic 2.5-hour drive southwest toward Tarangire National Park winding through the Maasai Steppe with sightings of traditional Maasai herdsmen clad in vibrant shĂºkĂ s before entering the park, popping open the roof of your vehicle, and diving into your first official game drive where the landscape shifts into a dramatic, prehistoric world dominated by ancient, giant Baobab trees as you follow the winding paths along the Tarangire River circuit, the primary lifeline of this ecosystem, witnessing the park's legendary, multi-generational elephant herds—sometimes numbering up to 300 individuals—digging for water in the dry riverbeds, stopping for a gourmet picnic lunch at a secure, elevated viewpoint overlooking the river plains while watching zebras and waterbucks drink below, then continuing game viewing into the golden hour keeping a sharp lookout for lions and leopards lounging in the lower branches of the baobabs before driving at sunset to an eco-sensitive luxury tented lodge situated right inside the wildlife corridor where you fall asleep to the authentic sounds of the African night.
Wake up early to the smell of freshly brewed Tanzanian coffee, then depart Tarangire for a short, picturesque 1-hour drive to Lake Manyara National Park uniquely positioned at the base of the sheer 600-meter-high Great Rift Valley Escarpment where, upon entering the park, you pass through a dramatic, evergreen groundwater jungle forest—a haven for large troops of olive baboons, blue monkeys, and hornbills—before the forest opens up into acacia woodlands where your guide slows down to scan the branches for Lake Manyara's legendary tree-climbing lions, a rare behavioral adaptation you won't easily find elsewhere, then drive out onto the grassy floodplain to view the shimmering, alkaline shores of the soda lake beautifully framed by thousands of bright pink lesser flamingos, pelicans, and wallowing hippos before ascending the winding Rift Valley escarpment wall to Karatu where you check into a charming lodge located near organic coffee farms and enjoy a multi-course dinner.
An early departure takes you from Karatu into the mist-shrouded rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, ascending the outer crater rim and stopping briefly at the panoramic viewing platform for a breathtaking view of the massive caldera below before descending the dry outer slopes and transitioning into the iconic, endless short-grass savanna plains of the Serengeti National Park, then pausing at the Naabi Hill Gate to register your entry while enjoying a short walk to the top of a rocky kopje for a 360-degree view of the vast plains, followed by a picnic lunch before entering the Seronera Valley where game viewing begins immediately amid the abundance of water in this central valley that ensures year-round resident wildlife, making it one of the most reliable places in Africa to spot large prides of lions, hyenas, and gazelles moving across the plains, before arriving at your luxury tented camp located deep within the unfenced heart of the park where you unwind with a sundowner drink around a roaring campfire as your guide shares local folklore before dinner.
Set off for a dawn game drive, the absolute best time to catch apex predators returning from their nightly hunts, as you watch female lions coordinating stalks on grazing herds or spot a solitary cheetah scanning the horizon from the summit of a termite mound, then return to camp for a late multi-course hot breakfast or enjoy an authentic bush breakfast out on the savanna beneath an acacia tree before spending the afternoon exploring the Seronera River circuits and the famous Kopjes—massive granitic rock islands rising from the grass that serve as vital lookout posts and nurseries for big cats—while your guide targets the riverine trees to find camouflaged leopards resting with their kills on high branches, then as the afternoon heat fades watch herds of giraffes, buffaloes, and topis silhouetted against the open horizon before returning to your luxury tented camp for hot safari showers, dinner under the stars, and an unforgettable night surrounded by nature.
Today is fully customized to track the movement of the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest overland mammal migration on earth, so depending on the exact month of your safari your Africa Rise Up guide will dynamically route your vehicle to where the massive, moving herds are concentrated
- whether to the Southern Plains and Ndutu from January to March for the high-intensity calving season
- The Western Corridor from April to June for the dramatic Grumeti River crossings
- The Northern Serengeti from July to October for the world-famous Mara River crossings
spending hours immersed in the center of hundreds of thousands of bellowing wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles as they navigate the plains closely shadowed by opportunistic predators like lions, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas, offering unparalleled wildlife photography opportunities before returning to camp deeply exhilarated by one of nature's greatest spectacles to gather around the campfire reviewing your photos and sharing stories.
Enjoy a final, golden hour morning game drive through the Serengeti as you slowly weave your way back toward the Naabi Hill Gate, your last chance to spot rare nocturnal species like caracals, servals, or bat-eared foxes before leaving the park, then enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch at the park boundary before driving back up into the cooler, lushly forested volcanic highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the air turns crisp as you ascend to an altitude of over 2,200 meters, then check into a premium lodge situated directly on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim and spend the evening relaxing on the viewing deck sipping a hot beverage while watching the shadows stretch across the 600-meter-deep caldera floor as the sun sets, followed by an elegant dinner by a log fire.
Wake up before dawn for an early descent down the steep, forested walls into the Ngorongoro Crater Floor for a high-intensity game drive, arriving early to explore this enclosed volcanic Eden before the day's heat and outside vehicles arrive, as the crater floor hosts over 25,000 large mammals in a highly concentrated space where you navigate through the Lerai Forest to spot large bull elephants and secretive leopards, cruise along the shores of Lake Magadi to watch thousands of flamingos, and search the open grasslands for the crater's most prized inhabitants: the critically endangered Black Rhino, followed by a scenic picnic lunch right at the famous Ngoitokitok Hippo Pool watching hippos submerge just meters away, then ascend out of the crater and enjoy a smooth drive back to Arusha where your guide transfers you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your outbound international flight or drops you off at your designated Arusha hotel, concluding your unforgettable classic Tanzanian explorer safari.

Frequently Asked Questions
General
This trip runs beautifully year-round. We dynamically shift your accommodations inside the Serengeti month-by-month to ensure you are always located right next to where the Great Migration herds are
This specific itinerary is designed to be exceptional year-round, as we dynamically adjust your accommodations and game drive routes to match seasonal wildlife movements.
- Dry Season (June to October): Best for general wildlife viewing. Vegetation is thin and animals gather reliably around the Tarangire River and Ngorongoro Crater waterholes. This is also when the Great Migration is in the Northern Serengeti.
- Calving Season (January to March): Ideal for witnessing the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti plains, which draws high numbers of apex predators.
- Green Season (November to December & April to May): Features beautiful emerald landscapes, exceptional bird watching, and fewer tourist vehicles across the circuits.
Most international passport holders require a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. It is highly recommended to apply online for a Tanzanian e-Visa at least 2 to 3 weeks before departure to avoid long queues at the airport.
- US Citizens: Required to obtain a Multiple-Entry Visa, which costs $100 USD.
- UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian Citizens: Eligible for a Single-Entry Tourist Visa, which costs $50 USD.
- Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date and contain at least two completely blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
Your health and safety are paramount. Please note the following medical guidelines:
- Yellow Fever: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if you are arriving from or transiting through an endemic country (such as Kenya or other parts of sub-Saharan Africa/South America) for more than 12 hours.
- Malaria Prophylaxis: Northern Tanzania is a malaria-endemic zone. We highly advise consulting your travel clinic or physician to obtain a prescription for malaria preventative medication (such as Malarone or Doxycycline).
- General Precautions: Always use the mosquito netting provided in the lodges, wear insect repellent containing DEET in the evenings, and drink only the filtered, bottled mineral water provided continuously in our safari vehicles.
Because your luggage is transported inside the luggage compartment of our 4x4 safari Land Cruisers, space is limited.
- Type of Bag: You must use soft-sided duffel bags or flexible suitcases. Rigid, hard-shell plastic suitcases are highly discouraged as they do not pack efficiently into safari vehicles.
- Weight Limit: We recommend keeping your main bag under 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 lbs).
- Daypack: Bring a small daypack inside the main cabin to hold your camera gear, binoculars, prescription medications, sunglasses, and personal documentation.
Yes, you will remain well-connected throughout your journey.
- In the Vehicle: Every custom Africa Rise Up 4x4 Land Cruiser is equipped with an internal power inverter featuring standard charging sockets, allowing you to charge your camera batteries, smartphones, and tablets while driving on game tracks.
- At the Lodges: All mid-range and luxury tented camps and lodges feature charging stations in either the main lounge or directly inside your private tent. Most accommodations provide complimentary Wi-Fi in the central dining and lounge spaces, though connections can occasionally be slow due to remote wilderness locations.
